A vulnerability, which was classified as very critical, has been found in Synology DiskStation Manager 4.3-3776 (Network Attached Storage Software). This issue affects an unknown code block of the file webman/modules/ControlPanel/modules/externaldevices.cgi. The manipulation of the argument printerid with an unknown input leads to a privileges management vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-269. The product does not properly assign, modify, track, or check privileges for an actor, creating an unintended sphere of control for that actor. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability.
The weakness was presented 09/10/2013 by Andrea Fabrizi with andreafabrizi.it as confirmed mailinglist post (Bugtraq). The advisory is shared at seclists.org. The public release happened without involvement of Synology. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known. The price for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 08/25/2017). MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1068 for this issue.
