Linux Kernel Perf Tool access control

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

This vulnerability is referenced as CVE-2013-1060. No exploit is available. It is suggested to install a patch to address this issue.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel (Operating System) (the affected version unknown) and classified as critical. This issue affects an unknown part of the component Perf Tool. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a access control vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-264. Impacted is confidentiality, and integrity. The summary by CVE is:

A certain Ubuntu build procedure for perf, as distributed in the Linux kernel packages in Ubuntu 10.04 LTS, 12.04 LTS, 12.10, 13.04, and 13.10, sets the HOME environment variable to the ~buildd directory and consequently reads the system configuration file from the ~buildd directory, which allows local users to gain privileges by leveraging control over the buildd account.

The weakness was published 09/06/2013 by Vasily Kulikov with Red Hat as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared at ubuntu.com. The public release has been coordinated with Linux. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2013-1060 since 01/11/2013. An attack has to be approached locally. A simple authentication is necessary for exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1068 for this issue.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 69808 (Ubuntu 10.04 LTS : linux-ec2 vulnerabilities (USN-1940-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Ubuntu Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 195954 (Ubuntu Security Notification for Linux-lts-quantal Vulnerabilities (USN-1947-1)).

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (69808), SecurityFocus (BID 60466†), OSVDB (97215†), Secunia (SA54539†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-41335†). Similar entries are available at VDB-7176, VDB-7177 and VDB-9054. If you want to get the best quality for vulnerability data then you always have to consider VulDB.
