Linux Kernel 3.3.7.1 btrfs CRC32C cryptographic issue

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability categorized as problematic has been discovered in Linux Kernel 3.3.7.1. This issue affects some unknown processing of the component btrfs CRC32C. The manipulation results in cryptographic issue. This vulnerability is identified as CVE-2012-5374. Additionally, an exploit exists.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in Linux Kernel 3.3.7.1 (Operating System). Affected is an unknown functionality of the component btrfs CRC32C. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a cryptographic issue vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-310. This is going to have an impact on availability. CVE summarizes:

The CRC32C feature in the Btrfs implementation in the Linux kernel before 3.8-rc1 allows local users to cause a denial of service (extended runtime of kernel code) by creating many different files whose names are associated with the same CRC32C hash value.

The weakness was released 12/13/2012 by Pascal Junod as 463 as not defined mailinglist post (Website). The advisory is shared for download at seclists.org. The public release happened without coordination with the vendor. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2012-5374 since 10/10/2012. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1600.

After immediately, there has been an exploit disclosed. The exploit is shared for download at crypto.junod.info. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 29 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 74913 (openSUSE Security Update : kernel (openSUSE-SU-2013:0395-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 195954 (Ubuntu Security Notification for Linux-lts-quantal Vulnerabilities (USN-1947-1)).

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (80678), Tenable (74913), SecurityFocus (BID 56940†), OSVDB (88440†) and Secunia (SA52507†).
