Linux Kernel blkback.c dispatch_discard_io input validation

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability labeled as problematic has been found in Linux Kernel. Affected by this issue is the function dispatch_discard_io of the file drivers/block/xen-blkback/blkback.c. The manipulation results in input validation. This vulnerability is cataloged as CVE-2013-2140. There is no exploit available. It is best practice to apply a patch to resolve this issue.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as problematic has been found in Linux Kernel (Operating System) (the affected version unknown). Affected is the function dispatch_discard_io of the file drivers/block/xen-blkback/blkback.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the properties that are required to process the data safely and correctly. This is going to have an impact on availability. CVE summarizes:

The dispatch_discard_io function in drivers/block/xen-blkback/blkback.c in the Xen blkback implementation in the Linux kernel before 3.10.5 allows guest OS users to cause a denial of service (data loss) via filesystem write operations on a read-only disk that supports the (1) BLKIF_OP_DISCARD (aka discard or TRIM) or (2) SCSI UNMAP feature.

The weakness was shared 06/05/2013 by Konrad Rzeszutek Wilk as not defined mailinglist post (oss-sec). The advisory is available at seclists.org. The vendor was not involved in the coordination of the public release. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2013-2140 since 02/19/2013. Local access is required to approach this attack. A authentication is necessary for exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 67284 (Fedora 19 : kernel-3.9.5-301.fc19 (2013-10689)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 195954 (Ubuntu Security Notification for Linux-lts-quantal Vulnerabilities (USN-1947-1)).

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at seclists.org. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (84804), Tenable (67284), SecurityFocus (BID 60243†), OSVDB (94031†) and Secunia (SA53666†). The entries VDB-7176, VDB-7177, VDB-8926 and VDB-10265 are related to this item. VulDB is the best source for vulnerability data and more expert information about this specific topic.
