Linux Kernel drivers/cdrom/cdrom.c mmc_ioctl_cdrom_read_data information disclosure

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as problematic was found in Linux Kernel (Operating System) (the affected version is unknown). Affected by this vulnerability is the function mmc_ioctl_cdrom_read_data of the file drivers/cdrom/cdrom.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a information disclosure vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-200. The product exposes sensitive information to an actor that is not explicitly authorized to have access to that information. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality. The summary by CVE is:

The mmc_ioctl_cdrom_read_data function in drivers/cdrom/cdrom.c in the Linux kernel through 3.10 allows local users to obtain sensitive information from kernel memory via a read operation on a malfunctioning CD-ROM drive.

The weakness was published 06/06/2013 by Jonathan Salwan as not defined mailinglist post (oss-sec). It is possible to read the advisory at seclists.org. The public release has been coordinated with Linux. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2013-2164 since 02/19/2013. Attacking locally is a requirement. A single authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1592 according to MITRE ATT&CK.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 69122 (Ubuntu 10.04 LTS : linux-ec2 vulnerabilities (USN-1913-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Ubuntu Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 175902 (Debian Security Update for Linux (DSA 2745-1)).

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (84895), Tenable (69122), SecurityFocus (BID 60375†), OSVDB (94033†) and Secunia (SA54311†).
