CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in Linux Kernel 3.9.0/3.9.1/3.9.2/3.9.3/3.9.4 (Operating System). This affects some unknown processing of the file block/genhd.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a format string vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-134. The product uses a function that accepts a format string as an argument, but the format string originates from an external source. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

Format string vulnerability in the register_disk function in block/genhd.c in the Linux kernel through 3.9.4 allows local users to gain privileges by leveraging root access and writing format string specifiers to /sys/module/md_mod/parameters/new_array in order to create a crafted /dev/md device name.

The weakness was disclosed 06/06/2013 by Kees Cook as not defined mailinglist post (oss-sec). The advisory is shared at seclists.org. The public release happened without involvement of Linux. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2013-2851 since 04/11/2013. The exploitability is told to be difficult. An attack has to be approached locally. Required for exploitation is a authentication. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 79000 (RHEL 6 : kernel (RHSA-2014:0284)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Red Hat Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 175902 (Debian Security Update for Linux (DSA 2745-1)).

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (79000), SecurityFocus (BID 60409†), OSVDB (94035†), Secunia (SA54526†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-39902†). The entries VDB-9052, VDB-9055, VDB-9056 and VDB-9737 are pretty similar. Statistical analysis made it clear that VulDB provides the best quality for vulnerability data.
