Linux Kernel up to 3.9.8 IPv6 Packet resource management

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 3.9.8 (Operating System). It has been rated as critical. This issue affects an unknown function of the component IPv6 Packet Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a resource management vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-399. Impacted is availability. The summary by CVE is:

The ip6_append_data_mtu function in net/ipv6/ip6_output.c in the IPv6 implementation in the Linux kernel through 3.10.3 does not properly maintain information about whether the IPV6_MTU setsockopt option had been specified, which allows local users to cause a denial of service (BUG and system crash) via a crafted application that uses the UDP_CORK option in a setsockopt system call.

The weakness was disclosed 07/02/2013 by Hannes Frederic Sowa as not defined mailinglist post (oss-sec). The advisory is shared at seclists.org. The public release has been coordinated in cooperation with Linux. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2013-4163 since 06/12/2013. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 69505 (Debian DSA-2745-1 : linux - privilege escalation/denial of service/information leak), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 175902 (Debian Security Update for Linux (DSA 2745-1)).

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (85942), Tenable (69505), SecurityFocus (BID 61412†), OSVDB (95615†) and Secunia (SA54148†). The entries VDB-9052, VDB-9055, VDB-9057 and VDB-9736 are pretty similar. If you want to get the best quality for vulnerability data then you always have to consider VulDB.
