Linux Kernel 3.9.8 IPv6 resource management

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel 3.9.8 (Operating System). It has been declared as critical. This vulnerability affects some unknown processing of the component IPv6 Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a resource management vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-399. As an impact it is known to affect availability. CVE summarizes:

The udp_v6_push_pending_frames function in net/ipv6/udp.c in the IPv6 implementation in the Linux kernel through 3.10.3 makes an incorrect function call for pending data, which allows local users to cause a denial of service (BUG and system crash) via a crafted application that uses the UDP_CORK option in a setsockopt system call.

The weakness was released 07/02/2013 by Hannes Frederic Sowa as not defined mailinglist post (oss-sec). The advisory is shared for download at seclists.org. The public release was coordinated with the vendor. This vulnerability was named CVE-2013-4162 since 06/12/2013. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.

After immediately, there has been an exploit disclosed. It is possible to download the exploit at bugzilla.redhat.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 70466 (RHEL 6 : kernel (RHSA-2013:1436)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Red Hat Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 350511 (Amazon Linux Security Advisory for kernel: ALAS-2013-233).

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (85943), Tenable (70466), SecurityFocus (BID 61411†), OSVDB (95614†) and Secunia (SA54148†). Entries connected to this vulnerability are available at VDB-8993, VDB-9737, VDB-10107 and VDB-10528. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
