Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in Linux Kernel up to 3.8.8 (Operating System). This issue affects the function tkill/tgkill of the file kernel/signal.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a resource management vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-399. Impacted is confidentiality. The summary by CVE is:
The do_tkill function in kernel/signal.c in the Linux kernel before 3.8.9 does not initialize a certain data structure, which allows local users to obtain sensitive information from kernel memory via a crafted application that makes a (1) tkill or (2) tgkill system call.
The weakness was presented 04/17/2013 by Emese Revfy as not defined mailinglist post (oss-sec). The advisory is shared at seclists.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2013-2141 since 02/19/2013. The exploitation is known to be easy. An attack has to be approached locally. The requirement for exploitation is a simple authentication. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 71389 (RHEL 6 : kernel (RHSA-2013:1801)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Red Hat Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 350511 (Amazon Linux Security Advisory for kernel: ALAS-2013-233).
Upgrading to version 3.8.9 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at patchwork.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be patching the affected component. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (84726), Tenable (71389), SecurityFocus (BID 60254†), OSVDB (93907†) and Secunia (SA53816†). See VDB-9736, VDB-10528 and VDB-63586 for similar entries. Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
