Linux Kernel up to 3.8.8 SNB/SNB-EP offcore_response_0/offcore_response_1 input validation

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 3.8.8 and classified as problematic. Impacted is an unknown function of the component SNB/SNB-EP. Executing a manipulation of the argument offcore_response_0/offcore_response_1 can lead to input validation. This vulnerability is tracked as CVE-2013-2146. No exploit exists. Applying a patch is advised to resolve this issue.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as problematic was found in Linux Kernel up to 3.8.8 (Operating System). This vulnerability affects an unknown code of the component SNB/SNB-EP. The manipulation of the argument offcore_response_0/offcore_response_1 with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the properties that are required to process the data safely and correctly. As an impact it is known to affect availability. CVE summarizes:

arch/x86/kernel/cpu/perf_event_intel.c in the Linux kernel before 3.8.9, when the Performance Events Subsystem is enabled, specifies an incorrect bitmask, which allows local users to cause a denial of service (general protection fault and system crash) by attempting to set a reserved bit.

The weakness was disclosed 04/16/2013 by Stephane Eranian as not defined mailinglist post (oss-sec). The advisory is shared for download at seclists.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2013-2146 since 02/19/2013. The attack needs to be approached locally. A single authentication is needed for exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 72325 (SuSE 11.3 Security Update : Linux kernel (SAT Patch Numbers 8823 / 8827)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 156671 (Oracle Enterprise Linux Security Update for Kernel (ELSA-2013-1173)).

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (84893), Tenable (72325), SecurityFocus (BID 60324†), OSVDB (93906†) and Secunia (SA53754†). The entries VDB-8493, VDB-9009 and VDB-9010 are pretty similar. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
