Linux Kernel 3.9 net/netrom/af_netrom.c nr_recvmsg information disclosure

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability identified as problematic has been detected in Linux Kernel 3.9. Affected by this issue is the function nr_recvmsg of the file net/netrom/af_netrom.c. Performing a manipulation results in information disclosure. This vulnerability was named CVE-2013-3232. There is no available exploit. You should upgrade the affected component.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel 3.9 (Operating System). It has been classified as problematic. This affects the function nr_recvmsg of the file net/netrom/af_netrom.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a information disclosure vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-200. The product exposes sensitive information to an actor that is not explicitly authorized to have access to that information. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality. The summary by CVE is:

The nr_recvmsg function in net/netrom/af_netrom.c in the Linux kernel before 3.9-rc7 does not initialize a certain data structure, which allows local users to obtain sensitive information from kernel stack memory via a crafted recvmsg or recvfrom system call.

The weakness was presented 04/07/2013 by Mathias Krause as not defined mailinglist post (Maillist). The advisory is shared at lkml.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2013-3232 since 04/21/2013. The exploitability is told to be easy. An attack has to be approached locally. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1592 for this issue.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 66248 (Fedora 18 : kernel-3.8.8-203.fc18 (2013-6537)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 166553 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security update for Linux kernel (SUSE-SU-2013:1832-1)).

Upgrading to version 3.9-rc7 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (83694), Tenable (66248), SecurityFocus (BID 59394†), OSVDB (92663†) and Secunia (SA53754†). See VDB-8485, VDB-8484, VDB-8486 and VDB-8487 for similar entries. If you want to get the best quality for vulnerability data then you always have to consider VulDB.
