Linux Kernel 3.9 net/nfc/llcp/sock.c llcp_sock_recvmsg length information disclosure

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability categorized as problematic has been discovered in Linux Kernel 3.9. Affected by this vulnerability is the function llcp_sock_recvmsg of the file net/nfc/llcp/sock.c of the component Linux Kernel. Such manipulation of the argument length leads to information disclosure. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2013-3233. No exploit exists. It is advisable to upgrade the affected component.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel 3.9 (Operating System) and classified as problematic. Affected by this issue is the function llcp_sock_recvmsg of the file net/nfc/llcp/sock.c of the component Linux Kernel. The manipulation of the argument length with an unknown input leads to a information disclosure vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-200. The product exposes sensitive information to an actor that is not explicitly authorized to have access to that information. Impacted is confidentiality. CVE summarizes:

The llcp_sock_recvmsg function in net/nfc/llcp/sock.c in the Linux kernel before 3.9-rc7 does not initialize a certain length variable and a certain data structure, which allows local users to obtain sensitive information from kernel stack memory via a crafted recvmsg or recvfrom system call.

The weakness was disclosed 04/07/2013 by Mathias Krause as not defined mailinglist post (Maillist). The advisory is shared for download at lkml.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2013-3233 since 04/21/2013. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack needs to be approached locally. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1592.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 66248 (Fedora 18 : kernel-3.8.8-203.fc18 (2013-6537)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks.

Upgrading to version 3.9-rc7 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (83695), Tenable (66248), SecurityFocus (BID 59396†), OSVDB (92662†) and Secunia (SA53647†). The entries VDB-8485, VDB-8484, VDB-8486 and VDB-8487 are pretty similar. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
