Details
A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 2.6.18-348/2.6.32-358 (Operating System). It has been rated as critical. This issue affects an unknown code of the component SCTP Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. Impacted is availability. The summary by CVE is:
The sctp_sf_do_5_2_4_dupcook function in net/sctp/sm_statefuns.c in the SCTP implementation in the Linux kernel before 3.8.5 does not properly handle associations during the processing of a duplicate COOKIE ECHO chunk, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (NULL pointer dereference and system crash) or possibly have unspecified other impact via crafted SCTP traffic.
The weakness was released 03/13/2013 by Petr Matousek as Bug 976562 as not defined mailinglist post (oss-sec). It is possible to read the advisory at seclists.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2013-2206 since 02/19/2013. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 71033 (SuSE 11.2 Security Update : Linux Kernel (SAT Patch Numbers 8509 / 8516 / 8518)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 156673 (Oracle Enterprise Linux Security Update for Unbreakable Enterprise Kernel (ELSA-2013-2543)).
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 13258.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (71033), SecurityFocus (BID 60715†), OSVDB (94456†), Secunia (SA54311†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-40417†). Entries connected to this vulnerability are available at VDB-9053, VDB-9055, VDB-9304 and VDB-9334. If you want to get the best quality for vulnerability data then you always have to consider VulDB.
