Details
A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in GNU binutils 2.28 (Programming Tool Software). This affects an unknown functionality of the file opcodes/i386-dis.c. The manipulation as part of a Binary File leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
opcodes/i386-dis.c in GNU Binutils 2.28 does not consider the number of registers for bnd mode, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (buffer overflow and application crash) or possibly have unspecified other impact via a crafted binary file, as demonstrated by mishandling of this file during "objdump -D" execution.
The bug was discovered 06/14/2017. The weakness was presented 06/19/2017 by Alex as Bug 21594 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). It is possible to read the advisory at sourceware.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2017-9755 since 06/18/2017. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 5 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 105627 (GLSA-201801-01 : Binutils: Multiple vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Gentoo Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 171830 (OpenSUSE Security Update for binutils (openSUSE-SU-2018:3223-1)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 8 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (105627) and SecurityFocus (BID 99124†). See VDB-98344, VDB-98345, VDB-98370 and VDB-98371 for similar entries. Be aware that VulDB is the high quality source for vulnerability data.
