CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as critical was found in GNU binutils 2.28 (Programming Tool Software). This vulnerability affects the function aarch64_ext_ldst_reglist of the file opcodes/aarch64-dis.c. The manipulation as part of a Binary File leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

The aarch64_ext_ldst_reglist function in opcodes/aarch64-dis.c in GNU Binutils 2.28 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (buffer overflow and application crash) or possibly have unspecified other impact via a crafted binary file, as demonstrated by mishandling of this file during "objdump -D" execution.

The bug was discovered 06/14/2017. The weakness was shared 06/19/2017 by Alex as Bug 21595 as confirmed bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is shared for download at sourceware.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2017-9756 since 06/18/2017. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. Technical details and also a public exploit are known.

A public exploit has been developed by Alexandre Adamski and been published immediately after the advisory. It is possible to download the exploit at github.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 5 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 105627 (GLSA-201801-01 : Binutils: Multiple vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Gentoo Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 171830 (OpenSUSE Security Update for binutils (openSUSE-SU-2018:3223-1)).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 8 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Exploit-DB (42204), Tenable (105627) and SecurityFocus (BID 99103†).
