A vulnerability was found in LAME 3.99.5. It has been rated as critical. This issue affects the function fill_buffer_resample of the file util.c of the component Audio File Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The fill_buffer_resample function in util.c in libmp3lame.a in LAME 3.99.5 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (heap-based buffer over-read and application crash) via a crafted audio file.
The bug was discovered 06/17/2017. The weakness was disclosed 06/25/2017 by Agostino Sarubbo with Gentoo (Website). The advisory is shared at securityfocus.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2015-9101 since 06/25/2017. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.
