A vulnerability was found in PHP up to 5.6.27/7.0.12 (Programming Language Software). It has been rated as critical. In PHP before 5.6.28 and 7.x before 7.0.13, incorrect handling of various URI components in the URL parser could be used by attackers to bypass hostname-specific URL checks, as demonstrated by evil.example.com:80#@good.example.com/ and evil.example.com:[email protected]/ inputs to the parse_url function (implemented in the php_url_parse_ex function in ext/standard/url.c).

The bug was discovered 09/28/2016. The weakness was presented 07/10/2017 as confirmed git commit (GIT Repository). The advisory is shared at git.php.net. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2016-10397 since 07/10/2017. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 285 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k.
