Details
A vulnerability was found in ImageMagick up to 7.0.6 (Image Processing Software). It has been declared as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is some unknown functionality of the file coders/mpc.c of the component Stream Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does
not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the
properties that are required to process the data safely and
correctly. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
coders/mpc.c in ImageMagick before 7.0.6-1 does not enable seekable streams and thus cannot validate blob sizes, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (application crash) or possibly have unspecified other impact via an image received from stdin.
The bug was discovered 07/10/2017. The weakness was disclosed 07/19/2017 (Website). The advisory is shared at bugs.debian.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2017-11449 since 07/19/2017. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 8 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 101794 (Debian DSA-3914-1 : imagemagick - security update), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 196857 (Ubuntu Security Notification for Imagemagick Vulnerabilities (USN-3363-1)).
Upgrading to version 7.0.6-1 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (101794) and SecurityFocus (BID 99958†). The entries VDB-101833, VDB-101834, VDB-101943 and VDB-101945 are pretty similar. Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
