A vulnerability was found in Mozilla Firefox up to 23.0.1 (Web Browser). It has been declared as problematic. This vulnerability affects an unknown functionality of the component file:/ Handler. Mozilla Firefox before 24.0 on Android allows attackers to bypass the Same Origin Policy, and consequently conduct cross-site scripting (XSS) attacks or obtain password or cookie information, by using a symlink in conjunction with a file: URL for a local file.
The weakness was presented 09/17/2013 by Takeshi Terada (Inferno) with Mitsui Bussan Secure Directions as Mozilla Foundation Security Advisory 2013-84 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is available at mozilla.org. The public release was coordinated in cooperation with the vendor. This vulnerability was named CVE-2013-1727 since 02/13/2013. The exploitation appears to be difficult. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. This vulnerability is assigned to T1059.007 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.
