A vulnerability was found in Mozilla Firefox and Thunderbird 23.0 (Web Browser). It has been rated as critical. This issue affects some unknown functionality of the component Mozilla Updater. Mozilla Updater in Mozilla Firefox before 24.0, Firefox ESR 17.x before 17.0.9, Thunderbird before 24.0, Thunderbird ESR 17.x before 17.0.9, and SeaMonkey before 2.21 does not ensure exclusive access to a MAR file, which allows local users to gain privileges by creating a Trojan horse file after MAR signature verification but before MAR use.
The weakness was shared 09/17/2013 by Seb Patane (Inferno) with Google as Mozilla Foundation Security Advisory 2013-83 as confirmed advisory (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at mozilla.org. The vendor cooperated in the coordination of the public release. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2013-1726 since 02/13/2013. The exploitation is known to be difficult. Attacking locally is a requirement. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1068 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
After immediately, there has been an exploit disclosed. It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 70036 (Fedora 19 : firefox-24.0-1.fc19 / xulrunner-24.0-2.fc19 (2013-16992)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 121578 (Avant Browser Rendering Engines Multiple Security Vulnerabilities).
Upgrading to version 24.0 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at mozilla.org. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
