A vulnerability classified as critical was found in libxml2 (Document Processing Software) (the affected version unknown). This vulnerability affects the function xmlRegExecPushStringInterna of the file xmlregexp.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. As an impact it is known to affect availability.
The weakness was shared 09/11/2013 by Gaurav Gupta with Samsung as Bug 707749 - NULL pointer dereferenced in xmlregexp.c as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is available at bugzilla.gnome.org. The vendor cooperated in the coordination of the public release. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.
Applying the patch Fix potential NULL pointer dereferences in regexp code is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.gnome.org. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
