Details
A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in libxml2 (Document Processing Software) (affected version not known). This affects the function xmlRegExecGetValues of the file xmlregexp.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. This is going to have an impact on availability.
The weakness was presented 09/11/2013 by Gaurav Gupta with Samsung as Bug 707749 - NULL pointer dereferenced in xmlregexp.c as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared at bugzilla.gnome.org. The public release was coordinated in cooperation with the project team. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.
Applying the patch Fix potential NULL pointer dereferences in regexp code is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.gnome.org. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
