A vulnerability was found in libxml2 (Document Processing Software) (affected version unknown). It has been rated as critical. Affected by this issue is the function xmlDOMWrapCloneNode of the file tree.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. Impacted is confidentiality, and integrity.
The weakness was disclosed 09/11/2013 by Gaurav Gupta with Samsung as Bug 707750 - NULL pointer dereferenced in tree.c as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared for download at bugzilla.gnome.org. The public release has been coordinated in cooperation with the vendor. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
Applying the patch Fix a potential NULL dereference in tree code is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.gnome.org. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
