Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in libxml2 (Document Processing Software) (unknown version). Affected is the function xmlNanoHTTPConnectAttempt of the file nanohttp.c of the component Socket Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory leak vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-401. The product does not sufficiently track and release allocated memory after it has been used, which slowly consumes remaining memory. This is going to have an impact on availability.
The weakness was released 09/30/2013 by Gaurav Gupta with Samsung as Bug 705188 - Leaked Resource in nanohttp.c as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared for download at bugzilla.gnome.org. The public release was coordinated with the vendor. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
Applying the patch run close socket on Solaris/same as we do on other platforms is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.gnome.org. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
