Oracle Outside In Technology 8.4.0/8.4.1 Outside In Filters stack-based overflow

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability has been found in Oracle Outside In Technology 8.4.0/8.4.1 and classified as problematic. Affected is an unknown function of the component Outside In Filters. Performing a manipulation results in stack-based overflow. This vulnerability was named CVE-2013-5791. In addition, an exploit is available. The affected component should be upgraded.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, was found in Oracle Outside In Technology 8.4.0/8.4.1 (Programming Tool Software). This affects an unknown part of the component Outside In Filters. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a stack-based overflow vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-121. A stack-based buffer overflow condition is a condition where the buffer being overwritten is allocated on the stack (i.e., is a local variable or, rarely, a parameter to a function). This is going to have an impact on availability. The summary by CVE is:

Unspecified vulnerability in the Oracle Outside In Technology component in Oracle Fusion Middleware 8.4.0 and 8.4.1 allows context-dependent attackers to affect availability via unknown vectors related to Outside In Filters. NOTE: the previous information is from the October 2013 CPU. Oracle has not commented on claims from a third party that the issue is a stack-based buffer overflow in the Microsoft Access 1.x parser in vsacs.dll before 8.4.0.108 and before 8.4.1.52, which allows attackers to execute arbitrary code via a long field (aka column) name.

The weakness was presented 10/15/2013 by Will Dormann with CERT/CC as Oracle Critical Patch Update Advisory - October 2013 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared at oracle.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2013-5791 since 09/18/2013. An attack has to be approached locally. A authentication is necessary for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.

A public exploit has been developed by Citadelo and been published 4 months after the advisory. The exploit is shared for download at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 71320 (MS13-105: Vulnerabilities in Microsoft Exchange Server Could Allow Remote Code Execution (2915705)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins.

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 13494.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (87925), Exploit-DB (31222), Tenable (71320), SecurityFocus (BID 63076†) and Secunia (SA56237†). Further details are available at isc.sans.edu. See VDB-9253, VDB-10249, VDB-10822 and VDB-10703 for similar entries.
