A vulnerability was found in Dnsmasq up to 2.77 (Domain Name Software). It has been rated as critical. This issue affects some unknown processing of the component DNS Packet Size Handler. In dnsmasq before 2.78, if the DNS packet size does not match the expected size, the size parameter in a memset call gets a negative value. As it is an unsigned value, memset ends up writing up to 0xffffffff zero's (0xffffffffffffffff in 64 bit platforms), making dnsmasq crash.
The bug was discovered 10/02/2017. The weakness was released 10/03/2017 by Felix Wilhelm with Google Security Team (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at mail-archive.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2017-13704 since 08/25/2017. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
