Apple iOS up to 7.0.2 Passcode race condition

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Apple iOS up to 7.0.2 (Smartphone Operating System) and classified as critical. This issue affects an unknown part of the component Passcode Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a race condition vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-362. The product contains a code sequence that can run concurrently with other code, and the code sequence requires temporary, exclusive access to a shared resource, but a timing window exists in which the shared resource can be modified by another code sequence that is operating concurrently. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

Multiple race conditions in the Phone app in Apple iOS before 7.0.3 allow physically proximate attackers to bypass the locked state, and dial the telephone numbers in arbitrary Contacts entries, by visiting the Contacts pane.

The weakness was published 10/22/2013 by Dany Lisiansky as APPLE-SA-2013-10-22-1 as confirmed mailinglist post (Apple Security Mailinglist). It is possible to read the advisory at lists.apple.com. The mailinglist post contains:

Race conditions existed in the Phone app at the lock screen. Under various circumstances, the Phone app may allow access to the Contacts pane. This issue was addressed by preventing this display of the Contacts pane while the phone is locked.
The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2013-5164 since 08/15/2013. Attacking locally is a requirement. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 70562 (Apple iOS < 7.0.3 Multiple Security Bypass Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Mobile Devices.

Upgrading to version 10.9 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (88239), Tenable (70562), SecurityFocus (BID 63278†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-47594†). Similar entries are available at VDB-10894 and VDB-10893. Be aware that VulDB is the high quality source for vulnerability data.
