Apple Mac OS X up to 10.8 App Sandbox access control

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Apple Mac OS X up to 10.8 (Operating System). It has been declared as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown code block of the component App Sandbox. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a access control vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-264. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

App Sandbox in Apple Mac OS X before 10.9 allows attackers to bypass intended sandbox restrictions via a crafted app that uses the LaunchServices interface to specify process arguments.

The weakness was disclosed 10/22/2013 by Friedrich Graeter with The Soulmen GbR as APPLE-SA-2013-10-22-3 as confirmed mailinglist post (Apple Security Mailinglist). The advisory is shared at lists.apple.com. The mailinglist post contains:

The LaunchServices interface for launching an application allowed sandboxed apps to specify the list of arguments passed to the new process. A compromised sandboxed application could abuse this to bypass the sandbox. This issue was addressed by disallowing sandboxed applications from specifying arguments.
This vulnerability is known as CVE-2013-5179 since 08/15/2013. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1068 for this issue.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 70561 (Mac OS X 10.x < 10.9 Multiple Vulnerabilities (BEAST)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family MacOS X Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 121815 (Apple Mac OS X v10.9.2 and Security Update 2014-001 Not Installed (APPLE-SA-2014-02-25-1)).

Upgrading to version 10.9 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (88211), Tenable (70561), SecurityFocus (BID 63311†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-43413†). The entries VDB-10327, VDB-10324, VDB-10946 and VDB-10932 are pretty similar. Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
