Apple Mac OS X up to 10.8 curl memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Apple Mac OS X up to 10.8 (Operating System). It has been classified as critical. This affects some unknown processing of the component curl. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

Stack-based buffer overflow in the Curl_sasl_create_digest_md5_message function in lib/curl_sasl.c in curl and libcurl 7.26.0 through 7.28.1, when negotiating SASL DIGEST-MD5 authentication, allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (crash) and possibly execute arbitrary code via a long string in the realm parameter in a (1) POP3, (2) SMTP or (3) IMAP message.

The weakness was published 10/22/2013 by Volema as APPLE-SA-2013-10-22-3 as confirmed mailinglist post (Apple Security Mailinglist). The advisory is shared at lists.apple.com. The mailinglist post contains:

Multiple vulnerabilities existed in curl, the most serious of which may lead to arbitrary code execution. These issues were addressed by updating curl to version 7.30.0 (sic)
This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2013-0249 since 12/06/2012. The exploitability is told to be difficult. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.

The exploit is shared for download at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 72053 (GLSA-201401-14 : cURL: Multiple vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Gentoo Local Security Checks.

Upgrading to version 10.9 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 13109.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (81935), Exploit-DB (24487), Tenable (72053), SecurityFocus (BID 57842†) and OSVDB (89988†). Similar entries are available at VDB-7621, VDB-10946, VDB-10932 and VDB-10931. Statistical analysis made it clear that VulDB provides the best quality for vulnerability data.
