A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in Apple macOS up to 10.13.1 (Operating System). This issue affects some unknown processing of the component Wi-Fi. Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA and WPA2) allows reinstallation of the Group Temporal Key (GTK) during the four-way handshake, allowing an attacker within radio range to replay frames from access points to clients.
The bug was discovered 10/16/2017. The weakness was presented 10/31/2017 by Mathy Vanhoef as HT208221 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared at support.apple.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2017-13078 since 08/22/2017. Access to the local network is required for this attack to succeed. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1211 for this issue. The advisory points out:
A logic issue existed in the handling of state transitions. This was addressed with improved state management.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 103917 (SUSE SLED12 / SLES12 Security Update : wpa_supplicant (SUSE-SU-2017:2745-1) (KRACK)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 176821 (Debian Security Update for firmware-nonfree (DLA 1573-1)).
Upgrading to version 10.13.1 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
