Apple Mac OS X up to 10.8 Mail Header Display cryptographic issue

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Apple Mac OS X up to 10.8 (Operating System). It has been rated as critical. This issue affects an unknown code block of the component Mail Header Display Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a cryptographic issue vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-310. Impacted is confidentiality, and integrity. The summary by CVE is:

Mail in Apple Mac OS X before 10.9 allows remote attackers to spoof the existence of a cryptographic signature for an e-mail message by using the multipart/signed content type within an unsigned message.

The weakness was published 10/22/2013 by Michael Roitzsch with Technische Universität Dresden as APPLE-SA-2013-10-22-3 as confirmed mailinglist post (Apple Security Mailinglist). The advisory is shared at lists.apple.com. The mailinglist post contains:

A logic issue existed in Mail's handling of unsigned messages that nevertheless contained a multipart/signed part. The issue was addressed through improved handling of unsigned messages.
The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2013-5182 since 08/15/2013. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1600 for this issue.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 70561 (Mac OS X 10.x < 10.9 Multiple Vulnerabilities (BEAST)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family MacOS X Local Security Checks.

Upgrading to version 10.9 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (88225), Tenable (70561), SecurityFocus (BID 63346†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-44339†).
