Apple Mac OS X up to 10.8 Screen Lock access control

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

The Screen Lock implementation in Apple Mac OS X before 10.9 does not immediately accept Keychain Status menu Lock Screen commands, and instead incorrectly relies on a certain timeout setting, which allows physically proximate attackers to obtain sensitive information by reading a screen that should have transitioned into the locked state.

The weakness was shared 10/22/2013 by Michael Kisor, Christian Knappskog, Stefan Gronke and Patrick Reed as APPLE-SA-2013-10-22-3 as confirmed mailinglist post (Apple Security Mailinglist). The advisory is shared for download at lists.apple.com. The mailinglist post contains:

The "Lock Screen" command in the Keychain Status menu bar item did not take effect until after the "Require password [amount of time] after sleep or screen saver begins" setting had elapsed.
This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2013-5187 since 08/15/2013. The attack needs to be approached locally. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1068.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 70561 (Mac OS X 10.x < 10.9 Multiple Vulnerabilities (BEAST)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family MacOS X Local Security Checks.

Upgrading to version 10.9 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
