Details
A vulnerability classified as critical was found in Apple Mac OS X Server (Operating System). This vulnerability affects some unknown processing of the component FreeRADIUS. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
Stack-based buffer overflow in the cbtls_verify function in FreeRADIUS 2.1.10 through 2.1.12, when using TLS-based EAP methods, allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (server crash) and possibly execute arbitrary code via a long "not after" timestamp in a client certificate.
The weakness was shared 10/22/2013 by Timo Warns with PRESENSE Technologies GmbH as APPLE-SA-2013-10-22-5 as confirmed mailinglist post (Apple Security Mailinglist). The advisory is available at lists.apple.com. The mailinglist post contains:
A buffer overflow existed in FreeRADIUS when parsing the 'not after' timestamp in a client certificate, when using TLS-based EAP methods. This issue was addressed by updating FreeRADIUS to version 2.2.0.This vulnerability was named CVE-2012-3547 since 06/14/2012. The exploitation appears to be difficult. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 74758 (openSUSE Security Update : freeradius (openSUSE-SU-2012:1200-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 350616 (Amazon Linux Security Advisory for freeradius: ALAS-2012-131).
Upgrading to version 3.0 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 12721.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (78408), Tenable (74758), SecurityFocus (BID 55483†), OSVDB (85325†) and Secunia (SA50484†). The entries VDB-6290, VDB-10955, VDB-10949 and VDB-10950 are related to this item. If you want to get best quality of vulnerability data, you may have to visit VulDB.
