A vulnerability has been found in Ffmpeg and Libav (Multimedia Processing Software) (version now known) and classified as problematic. Affected by this vulnerability is the function init_get_bits of the file libavcodec/h264dec.c. The manipulation as part of a Return Value leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. In line libavcodec/h264dec.c:500 in libav(v13_dev0), ffmpeg(n3.4), chromium(56 prior Feb 13, 2017), the return value of init_get_bits is ignored and get_ue_golomb(&gb) is called on an uninitialized get_bits context, which causes a NULL deref exception.
The bug was discovered 01/03/2018. The weakness was released 01/03/2018 by Paul (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at bugzilla.libav.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2017-1000460 since 01/03/2018. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 176766 (Debian Security Update for libav (DLA 1740-1)).
