A vulnerability was found in Microsoft Office -/2003/2007/2010/2013 (Office Suite Software). It has been declared as very critical. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown code block of the file epsimp32.flt of the component WordPerfect Document Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. Stack-based buffer overflow in Microsoft Office 2003 SP3, 2007 SP3, 2010 SP1 and SP2, 2013, and 2013 RT allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted WordPerfect document (.wpd) file, aka "Word Stack Buffer Overwrite Vulnerability."
The issue has been introduced in 11/17/2003. The weakness was shared 11/12/2013 by Will Dormann with CERT/CC as MS13-091 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is shared at technet.microsoft.com. The vendor cooperated in the coordination of the public release. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2013-1324 since 01/12/2013. The exploitation appears to be difficult. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. The price for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 06/02/2021).
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 3648 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 70849 (MS13-091: Vulnerabilities in Microsoft Office Could Allow Remote Code Execution (2885093)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 110225 (Microsoft Office Remote Code Execution Vulnerability (MS13-091)).
Applying the patch MS13-091 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at technet.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 13165.
