Summary
A vulnerability marked as problematic has been reported in Linux Kernel up to 2.4.29-rc1/2.6.10 on SMP. The affected element is an unknown function. This manipulation causes race condition. This vulnerability is tracked as CVE-2005-0001. The attack is only possible within the local network. Moreover, an exploit is present. It is suggested to upgrade the affected component.
Details
A vulnerability classified as problematic was found in Linux Kernel up to 2.4.29-rc1/2.6.10 on SMP (Operating System). Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown code. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a race condition vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-362. The product contains a code sequence that can run concurrently with other code, and the code sequence requires temporary, exclusive access to a shared resource, but a timing window exists in which the shared resource can be modified by another code sequence that is operating concurrently. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Race condition in the page fault handler (fault.c) for Linux kernel 2.2.x to 2.2.7, 2.4 to 2.4.29, and 2.6 to 2.6.10, when running on multiprocessor machines, allows local users to execute arbitrary code via concurrent threads that share the same virtual memory space and simultaneously request stack expansion.
The bug was discovered 01/12/2005. The weakness was disclosed 01/12/2005 by Paul Starzetz with isec.pl (Website). The advisory is shared at isec.pl. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2005-0001 since 01/03/2005. The attack needs to be initiated within the local network. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.
After 1 days, there has been an exploit disclosed. It is possible to download the exploit at isec.pl. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 16166 (Fedora Core 3 : kernel-2.6.10-1.741_FC3 (2005-025)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 115055 (Linux Kernel Multiple Vulnerabilities (RHSA-2005:092-14)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at ftp.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published 1 days after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (18849), Tenable (16166), SecurityFocus (BID 12244†), OSVDB (12914†) and Secunia (SA13822†). The entries VDB-1048, VDB-1047, VDB-1049 and VDB-1046 are pretty similar. If you want to get the best quality for vulnerability data then you always have to consider VulDB.
