A vulnerability was found in Google Chrome 30.0.1599.101 (Web Browser) and classified as critical. This issue affects the function WebContentsImpl::AttachInterstitialPage of the file web_contents/web_contents_impl.cc of the component Interstitial Warning Handler. The WebContentsImpl::AttachInterstitialPage function in content/browser/web_contents/web_contents_impl.cc in Google Chrome before 31.0.1650.48 does not cancel JavaScript dialogs upon generating an interstitial warning, which allows remote attackers to spoof the address bar via a crafted web site.
The weakness was presented 09/24/2013 by Chamal De Silva as confirmed blog post (Blogspot). It is possible to read the advisory at googlechromereleases.blogspot.ch. The public release was coordinated in cooperation with Google. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2013-6626 since 11/05/2013. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 70986 (Debian DSA-2799-1 : chromium-browser - several vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 121689 (Avant Browser Rendering Engines Multiple Security Vulnerabilities).
Upgrading to version 31.0.1650.48 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at chrome.google.com. A possible mitigation has been published 2 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
