A vulnerability was found in FFmpeg 2.0.1 (Multimedia Processing Software) and classified as critical. Affected by this issue is the function filter_frame of the file libavfilter/vf_fps.c of the component Fifo Handler. The manipulation as part of a Empty Fifo leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability.
The weakness was shared 09/02/2013 by Krieger as avfilter/vf_fps: make sure the fifo is not empty before using it as confirmed git commit (GIT Repository). The advisory is available at git.videolan.org. The vendor cooperated in the coordination of the public release. The exploitation is known to be difficult. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known.
It is declared as proof-of-concept.
Upgrading to version 2.1 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at git.videolan.org. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem.
