A vulnerability classified as critical was found in FFmpeg 2.0.1 (Multimedia Processing Software). Affected by this vulnerability is the function get_cox of the file libavcodec/jpeg2000dec.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability.
The weakness was shared 10/15/2013 by Piotr Bandurski (ami_stuff) as avcodec/jpeg2000dec: fix context consistency with too large lowres as confirmed git commit (GIT Repository). It is possible to read the advisory at git.videolan.org. The vendor cooperated in the coordination of the public release. Access to the local network is required for this attack. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
Upgrading to version 2.1 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.videolan.org.
