A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in FFmpeg 2.0.1 (Multimedia Processing Software). Affected by this issue is the function decode_slice_header of the file libavcodec/h264.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a denial of service vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-404. The product does not release or incorrectly releases a resource before it is made available for re-use. Impacted is availability.

The weakness was published 10/24/2013 by Piotr Bandurski (ami_stuff) as avcodec/h264: do not trust last_pic_droppable when marking pictures as done as confirmed git commit (GIT Repository). The advisory is shared for download at git.videolan.org. The public release has been coordinated with the vendor. Access to the local network is required for this attack to succeed. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.

Upgrading to version 2.1 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.videolan.org.
