Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, was found in Wireshark (Packet Analyzer Software). Affected is an unknown functionality of the file epan/dissectors/packet-ipmi-picmg.c of the component IPMI Dissector. The manipulation as part of a Crafted Packet leads to a injection vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-74. The product constructs all or part of a command, data structure, or record using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify how it is parsed or interpreted when it is sent to a downstream component. This is going to have an impact on availability. CVE summarizes:
In Wireshark 2.2.0 to 2.2.12 and 2.4.0 to 2.4.4, the IPMI dissector could crash. This was addressed in epan/dissectors/packet-ipmi-picmg.c by adding support for crafted packets that lack an IPMI header.
The bug was discovered 02/22/2018. The weakness was disclosed 02/23/2018 as Bug 14409 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is shared for download at bugs.wireshark.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2018-7417 since 02/22/2018. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to launch the attack remotely.
