Details
A vulnerability has been found in Wireshark (Packet Analyzer Software) and classified as problematic. Affected by this vulnerability is some unknown functionality of the file epan/dissectors/packet-sigcomp.c of the component SigComp Dissector. The manipulation of the argument length as part of a Packet leads to a injection vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-74. The product constructs all or part of a command, data structure, or record using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify how it is parsed or interpreted when it is sent to a downstream component. As an impact it is known to affect availability. The summary by CVE is:
In Wireshark 2.2.0 to 2.2.12 and 2.4.0 to 2.4.4, the SIGCOMP dissector could crash. This was addressed in epan/dissectors/packet-sigcomp.c by correcting the extraction of the length value.
The bug was discovered 02/22/2018. The weakness was presented 02/23/2018 as Bug 14410 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is shared at bugs.wireshark.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2018-7418 since 02/22/2018. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1055 for this issue.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 107001 (openSUSE Security Update : wireshark (openSUSE-2018-210)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 371113 (F5 BIG-IP ASM and LTM Multiple Wireshark Vulnerabilities (K34035645)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 2 days after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
