A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Google Chrome 31.0.1650.57 (Web Browser). Affected by this issue is the function ReplaceSelectionCommand::doApply of the file editing/ReplaceSelectionCommand.cpp of the component javascript Protocol Script Handler. Use-after-free vulnerability in the editing implementation in Blink, as used in Google Chrome before 31.0.1650.63, allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service or possibly have unspecified other impact via JavaScript code that triggers removal of a node during processing of the DOM tree, related to CompositeEditCommand.cpp and ReplaceSelectionCommand.cpp.
The weakness was presented 11/08/2013 by Cloudfuzzer with Apple as 314469 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is available at googlechromereleases.blogspot.com. The public release was coordinated in cooperation with the vendor. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2013-6635 since 11/05/2013. The exploitation is known to be difficult. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 122790 (Apple iTunes Prior to 12.0.1 Multiple Vulnerabilities (HT6537)).
Upgrading to version 31.0.1650.63 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at chrome.google.com. A possible mitigation has been published 4 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
