A vulnerability has been found in zsh up to 5.4.2 and classified as problematic. This vulnerability affects the function hashcmd of the file exec.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
zsh through version 5.4.2 is vulnerable to a stack-based buffer overflow in the exec.c:hashcmd() function. A local attacker could exploit this to cause a denial of service.
The bug was discovered 12/04/2017. The weakness was disclosed 03/09/2018 with Red Hat as Bug 1553531 as confirmed bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is available at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2018-1071 since 12/04/2017. Local access is required to approach this attack. The requirement for exploitation is a single authentication. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.
