A vulnerability has been found in SecurEnvoy SecurMail up to 9.2 and classified as problematic. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown functionality of the component Email Message Handler. Cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability in SecurEnvoy SecurMail before 9.2.501 allows remote attackers to inject arbitrary web script or HTML via an HTML-formatted e-mail message.
The bug was discovered 03/12/2018. The weakness was shared 03/15/2018 as confirmed mailinglist post (Full-Disclosure). It is possible to read the advisory at seclists.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2018-7707 since 03/05/2018. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1059.007 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
A public exploit has been developed by SEC Consult and been published before and not just after the advisory. It is possible to download the exploit at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 2 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 370828 (SecurEnvoy SecurMail multiple critical vulnerabilities).
Upgrading to version 9.2.501 eliminates this vulnerability.
