Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as very critical, has been found in RealNetworks RealPlayer 16.0.2.32/16.0.3.51 (Multimedia Player Software). Affected by this issue is an unknown code of the component RMP File Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Heap-based buffer overflow in RealNetworks RealPlayer before 17.0.4.61 on Windows, and Mac RealPlayer before 12.0.1.1738, allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a long string in the TRACKID element of an RMP file, a different vulnerability than CVE-2013-7260.

The weakness was published 12/17/2013 by Ricardo Narvaja with Core Security Technologies as CORE-2013-0903 as not defined advisory (Website). The advisory is shared for download at coresecurity.com. The public release happened without coordination with the vendor. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2013-6877 since 11/26/2013. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. The current price for an exploit might be approx. USD $0-$5k (estimation calculated on 07/03/2024). It is expected to see the exploit prices for this product decreasing in the near future.

The exploit is available at coresecurity.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 71772 (RealPlayer for Windows < 17.0.4.61 RMP Buffer Overflow), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 121687 (RealNetworks RealPlayer Multiple Memory Corruption Vulnerabilities).

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 13998.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (89829), Tenable (71772), SecurityFocus (BID 64398†), OSVDB (101135†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-42781†). Similar entries are available at VDB-11603 and VDB-13250. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
