RealNetworks RealPlayer 16.0.2.32/16.0.3.51/17.0.2.206 RMP File Version/Encoding memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability marked as critical has been reported in RealNetworks RealPlayer 16.0.2.32/16.0.3.51/17.0.2.206. This impacts an unknown function of the component RMP File Handler. The manipulation of the argument Version/Encoding leads to memory corruption. This vulnerability is listed as CVE-2013-7260. In addition, an exploit is available. It is suggested to upgrade the affected component.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as very critical, has been found in RealNetworks RealPlayer 16.0.2.32/16.0.3.51/17.0.2.206 (Multimedia Player Software). This issue affects an unknown code of the component RMP File Handler. The manipulation of the argument Version/Encoding with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

Multiple stack-based buffer overflows in RealNetworks RealPlayer before 17.0.4.61 on Windows, and Mac RealPlayer before 12.0.1.1738, allow remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a long (1) version number or (2) encoding declaration in the XML declaration of an RMP file, a different issue than CVE-2013-6877.

The weakness was presented 12/20/2013 by Gabor Seljan with Core Security as confirmed advisory (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at service.real.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2013-7260 since 01/03/2014. The exploitation is known to be difficult. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known. The pricing for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 12/22/2024). It is expected to see the exploit prices for this product decreasing in the near future.

A public exploit has been developed by Gabor Seljan in Ruby and been published immediately after the advisory. The exploit is available at github.com. It is declared as highly functional. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 71772 (RealPlayer for Windows < 17.0.4.61 RMP Buffer Overflow), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 121845 (RealNetworks RealPlayer Buffer Overflow Vulnerability). The code used by the exploit is:

def exploit

    sploit =  rand_text_alpha_upper(target['OffsetClick'])
    sploit << generate_seh_payload(target.ret)
    sploit << rand_text_alpha_upper(target['OffsetMenu'] - sploit.length)
    sploit << generate_seh_payload(target.ret)
    sploit << rand_text_alpha_upper(17000) # Generate exception

    # Create the file
    print_status("Creating '#{datastore['FILENAME']}' file ...")
    file_create("<?xml version=\"" + sploit + "\"?>")

end

Upgrading to version 17.0.4.61 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 14001.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (90160), Exploit-DB (30468), Tenable (71772), SecurityFocus (BID 64695†) and OSVDB (101356†). See VDB-11540 for similar entry. Statistical analysis made it clear that VulDB provides the best quality for vulnerability data.
