A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in Microsoft Edge and ChakraCore (Web Browser) (affected version not known). Affected is some unknown functionality of the component Chakra Scripting Engine. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability.
The bug was discovered 05/08/2018. The weakness was disclosed 05/08/2018 with Microsoft as confirmed security update guide (Website). The advisory is available at portal.msrc.microsoft.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2018-0943 since 12/01/2017. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. A remote code execution vulnerability exists in the way that the Chakra scripting engine handles objects in memory in Microsoft Edge. The vulnerability could corrupt memory in such a way that an attacker could execute arbitrary code in the context of the current user. An attacker who successfully exploited the vulnerability could gain the same user rights as the current user. If the current user is logged on with administrative user rights, an attacker who successfully exploited the vulnerability could take control of an affected system. An attacker could then install programs; view, change, or delete data; or create new accounts with full user rights.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 109611 (KB4103731: Windows 10 Version 1703 May 2018 Security Update), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 91448 (Microsoft Edge Security Update for May 2018).
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
