Undertow up to 7.1.2 Web Server Header Injection response splitting

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Undertow up to 7.1.2. It has been classified as critical. This affects an unknown function of the component Web Server. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a response splitting vulnerability (Header Injection). CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-113. The product receives data from an HTTP agent/component (e.g., web server, proxy, browser, etc.), but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes CR and LF characters before the data is included in outgoing HTTP headers. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

In Undertow before versions 7.1.2.CR1, 7.1.2.GA it was found that the fix for CVE-2016-4993 was incomplete and Undertow web server is vulnerable to the injection of arbitrary HTTP headers, and also response splitting, due to insufficient sanitization and validation of user input before the input is used as part of an HTTP header value.

The bug was discovered 05/22/2018. The weakness was released 05/21/2018 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is shared at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2018-1067 since 12/04/2017. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 109390 (RHEL 6 / 7 : JBoss EAP (RHSA-2018:1249)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Red Hat Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 236749 (Red Hat Update for jboss-ec2-eap package for EAP 7.1.2(RHSA-2018:1249)).

Upgrading to version 7.1.2.CR1 or 7.1.2.GA eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at Tenable (109390). Entries connected to this vulnerability are available at VDB-112402, VDB-114826 and VDB-133757. Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
