A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, was found in Wireshark (Packet Analyzer Software). This affects an unknown function of the file epan/dissectors/packet-dns.c of the component DNS Dissector. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. In Wireshark 2.6.0, 2.4.0 to 2.4.6, and 2.2.0 to 2.2.14, the DNS dissector could crash. This was addressed in epan/dissectors/packet-dns.c by avoiding a NULL pointer dereference for an empty name in an SRV record.
The bug was discovered 05/22/2018. The weakness was presented 05/22/2018 as Bug 14681 as confirmed bug report (Bugzilla). It is possible to read the advisory at bugs.wireshark.org. Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 3 days after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
